The Hemp CBD Industry is still in the process of standardizing its terms and definitions: however, when it comes to the difference between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil, the confusion seemingly hangs on.

Many CBD product companies and sellers still refer to their products as Hemp Oil, when in fact it is hemp extract that contains CBD. So, what exactly is the difference and why is it important to clarify what constitutes both Hemp Oil and CBD Oil? Let’s take a look!

What Is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil is actually made from hemp seeds. It is packed with nutritional value and provides many benefits to general health as well as to skin, hair and nails. Hemp seed oil only contains trace amounts of the cannabinoid, CBD. Hemp Seed Oil contains a high percentage of antioxidants as well as both amino acids and essential fatty acids, linoleic acid, also known as Omega-6 and linolenic acid, known as Omega-3, which the body requires yet cannot be produced within the body.

Hemp seed oil can be used in foods, taken as a supplement and also is extremely beneficial when used, in conjunction with CBD oil, in skin care products, shampoos, conditioners and other topical products. However, it is NOT a source of CBD.

What Is Hemp Extract?

Hemp Extract is actually extracted from the flowers (and sometimes the leaves and stems) of the hemp plant. The highest concentration of CBD is found in the flowers of the hemp plant. The term “Hemp Extract” is often used instead of CBD Oil because of the marketing challenges currently being navigated for CBD businesses.

Generally speaking, Hemp Extract is usually associated with and refers to Full-Spectrum CBD Oil.

What Is CBD Oil?

Extracting the compounds from the flower of the hemp plant makes CBD Oil. The two most common methods of extraction are CO2 extraction and Ethanol Extraction.

The extracted CBD Crude Oil is extracted from the hemp biomass that contains the complete compound profile of the plant. Then it can go through various refinement processes such as ‘winterization’ or decarboxylation to remove the organic plant compounds like waxes, lipids and sometimes chlorophyll. This results in a more transparent and potent distillate.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil has the complete profile of 110 plus cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, essential vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, proteins and may include chlorophyll and fiber.

Broad Spectrum CBD Oil oil is basically the same as Full Spectrum except that the cannabinoid THC is mitigated to Non-Detectable (NDTHC) levels.

Both Full-Spectrum and Broad-Spectrum oils can be used in crafting many CBD products, from edibles to skin care and self care products.
